Seol In Ah is Unloading
Actress Seol In Ah (22 years old) made her debut as the main lead Cindy’s anti-fan in the 2015 KBS Drama, The Producers, and went into a bigger role in JTBC’s Strong Woman Do Bong Soon. The words “haughty and cold beauty” seemed to fit her, but after spending half a day with her, there weren’t any hints of arrogance, that I wondered if an actress can be this way. It wasn’t forced honesty when she appeared as a hidden camera agent on KBS’ A Look at Myself, showed straightforwardness in the dating entertainment show I Came Alone, and extraordinary body confidence on MBC’s Video Star. The reason she boldly shows herself, is because of her confidence in herself.
Q: How do you start your day?
A: I start my day by walking my dog. I don’t eat much (breakfast) because I feel bloated when I walk after I eat. Instead, I drink New Care products that will give me the nutrients. After consuming a pack, I feel full and energized to go for a walk.
Q: The number 1 related search word is ‘body’.
A: I don’t have good body proportions, but I think the pictures came out well. On the other hand, it’s a burden. I thought, “My body isn’t as good as that picture, though.” It’s making me workout and manage my body more because I don’t want to disappoint the public. There is one fatal factor for actresses. Appetite (laughs). There’s no way I can’t eat. I always eat Korean food, so I eat less greasy foods. Korean cuisine is the best energizer.
Q: You’re currently learning Jiujitsu on top of having a 3rd degree Taekwondo belt.
A: I find static exercise boring, and I like a dynamic workout. Jiujitsu and Taekwondo are fun exercises, so I do them. It’s my stress relief, and my endorphins are spinning, so I’m happy. As I relieve my stress, I lose my thoughts, remove the bad energy, and improve my concentration. I highly recommend it as a stress reliever. Highly recommend!
Q: Where do you get your frankness from?
A: It comes from my personality. I am honest, but I’m not confident. I’m bad at pretending. My honesty is often reflected on my face and actions. I can’t say confidently what I don’t know, but I can be honest about myself.
Q: How did you change your career path from dreaming of becoming an idol to being an actor?
A: Actually, I dreamed of becoming an actor from the very beginning. I started out as an idol trainee, but the team kept falling apart. In the end, it didn’t work out. I said I’ll be an actor and asked my agency for their understanding. So I started preparing on my own to enter the acting department.
Q: You’re currently studying acting in Seoul National University of the Arts.
A: I was a trainee, so I couldn’t properly attend school from my 3rd year of middle school to senior high school. After entering college, I went to school for a year without getting tied to my agency and practice. I had so much fun, that I pestered my agency to let me go for another semester. I want to go back to school, but since I’m already considered an old student, I don’t know anybody (laughs). When my male classmates come back from the military, I want to go back to school with them.
Q: What made (school) so fun?
A: The school club life was really fun. Our club is really active. I'm a member of the Bongsan Mask Dance Club of the College of Arts and Folklore Research. This club holds the title of Seoul Institute of the Arts’ first club. Ryu Seung Ryong, Song Eun I, and Park Gun Hyung are also members.
Q: While filming, you probably met a lot of seniors from your school.
A: I met Ahn Woo Yeon in JTBC’s Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, and Han Joo Wan in KBS’ School 2017. When I go to the reporting sites on MBC’s Section TV Entertainment News, I meet a lot of seniors from my school.
Q: Do you have a personal tip when at the filming site?
A: During the script reading, I tend to observe the tendencies of not only the actors, but also the staff. Then when we go to the set, I adjust my behavior according to their tendencies. My way of thinking is, “I should approach that person this way.” Understanding the tendencies of the people you work with will make filming run smoothly. I think actors should actively socialize with the people around them on set. I try to talk to them and become close to them in order for me to learn more.
Q: Are there any characters you played that touched your heart?
A: The role of Mirim in the web movie Close Your Eyes (Eyes Closed). Seeing Mirim stay cheerful even when she’s living in a difficult environment made me feel a sense of kinship and sympathy as I thought, “She’s just like me.” It’s a story about family violence and brutal murders, and gravitate towards it unexpectedly because it was a situation and character I never thought about. I was very immersed in the role. For a long time, I’ve been writing down a list of characters I wanted to try, and a lot of them were cute, lovely and easy-going characters such as Soo Jin in A Moment to Remember, and Allie in The Notebook. But Mirim was not that kind of character, so I think I felt for her because it was a new character.
Q: Is there a character you want to try these days?
A: Oh Hae Young from Another Oh Hae Young. I want to try a comfortable, lovely, successful working woman with no interest in love. ****An ordinary character who is comfortable at home, but is perfect at work. Rather than unusual or fancy characters, I want to play ordinary citizens and working women.
Q: Do you have any worries as an actor?
A: If I can continue acting for as long as I want. If I can survive the fierce competition. Having made my debut doesn’t mean it’s over, because I have to be an actor in the long run. I think it’s the same for the people in this industry who feel anxious.
Q: What kind of actor do you want to be?
A: I want to be like Kim Hye Soo, who has the charisma, appeal, and personality, even when she doesn’t put force into her acting. I want to be an actor who doesn’t feel uncomfortable with acting, so people can trust and watch me.
Q: What’s your new year goal?
A: To do at least 2 dramas! And to stay healthy.
