Sweet Rain
On a damp Sunday night when the heavy rain forecast was announced, the people who stayed behind after Na Inwoo left, said in unison with the early morning energy, “How can someone be so pure and pretty?”
Q: We’re meeting on a Sunday right when <1N2D> airs.
A: I usually watch the broadcast when I have time, but it’s a bit difficult to do it today. I’ll have to watch it after this, on my way home.
Q: I also like <Cleaning Up>, it’s a shame we can’t watch that too.
A: These days, technology is good, so even if you can’t watch it on TV, you can still watch it on different platforms. Watch it after this. I hope you enjoy it on your own comfortable way.
Q: I saw the <1N2D> preview, and it looks like you went on a summer camping trip. It’s a unique way to feel the season with your whole body. How is it?
A: It uses up a lot of energy, but it’s still fun. Going to new places, challenging things I’ve never done before, and eating food I’ve never tried before. I’m a very curious person. When I think about going somewhere and having fun with the members, I’m okay with getting the penalty or starving. Although, it is hard sometimes.
Q: I suddenly want to ask you this. Are you used to interviews now?
A: I’m still not used to it. Still, I think I’m better now than in my first interview. Right. I think I’ve improved.
Q: How was your first interview?
A: I’m someone who suddenly buffers. Some interviews are hectic, right? That’s when my mind buffers. The short-tempered company team leader sitting next to the editor was feeling frustrated. She couldn’t stand it. (laughs) And I got nervous seeing her like that, so I stuttered even more. Today’s interview is comfortable and nice.
Q: Your face got tanned. You look nice.
A: I get tanned easily in the summer. And it’s not that I don’t like my current skin tone, but the company wants me to take care of it. They say it looks good on screen to have a bit lighter tone.
Q: These days, <1N2D>, <Cleaning Up>, and <Jinxed At First>, are all airing. How is it?
A: How is what? The feeling? It’s nothing special. I’m just doing my job, and I’ve worked hard, and am working hard in all the filming sets. I don’t feel particularly happy or proud just because I’m part of several projects. What’s important (for me) is how to do better in the future. I think a lot about that.
Q: You’re quite calm. Isn’t this the moment you’ve been waiting for?
A: Hmm, no. That’s not the case.
Q: Really? Is that so?
A: If I get a job, I do it. If I get nothing, then I don’t work. I’m kind of like that. I just go with the flow.
Q: People usually say, “I’m very honored that a moment I’ve been earnestly looking forward to has come.” You’re different.
A: If I earnestly wait, will that moment really come? I’ve only just been working hard, and then I got an opportunity, and since that opportunity is something nice and good, I’ve worked even harder. That way, I won’t have any regrets.
Q: Do you have any anxieties or worries?
A: I don’t. I have no such thing. Isn’t that a good thing?
Q: You look good. Are you filming anything these days?
A: I’m currently filming the movie <Similar>. There are some last minute filming for <Cleaning Up>. And <Jinxed At First> already wrapped up.
Q: <Similar> is a remake of the 2000 drama. It was a work that received a lot of love in those days. Have you watched it?
A: (Shakes his head) No, I’m going to watch it when filming is done because it will make me conscious. Being kept in the dark is difficult for me because I get so many thoughts. When I'm part of a work that has an original, I see the original after filming is wrapped up. That’s usually what I do.
Q: Do you have a strong faith in yourself?
A: It’s because I’m a coward. I’m a coward. I’m afraid I’ll waver. I want to study the script well and express the character in the way I interpret it. I think that’s a right way to go about it.
Q: Do you know that for quite a while before you answered, you looked outside the window, where there is nothing to see because it’s dark? You had a serious face on.
A: I was thinking after hearing the question. I’m a very serious person, but people don’t know that.
Q: The weather forecast said, it’s going to rain tonight, but it hasn’t rained yet. I want to take a photo of you standing in a rainy alley.
A: I hope it rains so it will happen. But we can still make it happen even if it doesn’t rain. I think it’s fun to try new things. In today’s shoot, I learned a side of myself that I didn’t know before.
Q: Do you enjoy challenging yourself, or finding new sides of yourself? You’re not cautious?
A: Why should I? (Challenging myself and finding new sides of myself) is fun and exciting. There’s nothing I’m afraid of or cautious about.
Q: What kind of actor is Na Inwoo? Is that a cliché question?
A: I don’t know. What kind of actor do I look like? I don’t think that’s something that I can define. I think it depends on the eyes and thoughts of the viewer. I think that’s what it means to be an actor. It’s a little different from an artist who paints or writes to honestly express their inner thoughts.
Q: You’re working on a character, you have a script, there’s directing and a camera, and you have to pay attention to your teamwork with your co-actor, so it’s difficult to include your personal feelings, isn’t it?
A: That’s right. Because acting isn’t something you do alone. You asked me what kind of actor I am, and I think it depends on the project. And I think that’s how I should be. It’s impossible to define what kind of actor I am.
Q: How about this? How similar or different is the Na Inwoo in <1N2D>, and the Na Inwoo in real life?
A: I don’t think it’s a question of how similar or different the two are, but about which sides are highlighted. (1N2D) is a variety show that the whole family watches on a Sunday evening, and giving laughter and enjoyment is the goal of the program. So I think, my cheerful side is highlighted more. I’m not faking it, but due to the nature of the program, the situations I face are generally fun and enjoyable, so (my cheerful side) naturally comes out. I’m that cheerful person, and the calm and serious one right now is also me.
Q: I watched a re-run of <1N2D> this morning, and you were snoring loudly and sleeping well. That’s how real it is.
A: I also didn’t know it was that bad. Watching it was kinda funny. Image management? I don’t know what that is. I don’t do that. If I wanted to show only my cool side, I wouldn’t have done it from the start.
Q: Then what made you decide to join?
A: The company made me do it. Hehe. The members looked great together. These days, *spicy variety shows, dramas, and food are the trend. It’s not a stressful variety show, so I liked it. I thought it would be fun to be with the members. That’s why I did it. They’re all so nice.
(t/n: Spicy variety shows/dramas here mean stressful/intense shows)
Q: You don’t like spicy?
A: It’s not that I don’t like it, it’s just not my preference. People who like spicy like those kinds of shows & food.
Q: Watching you on screen, and even having a conversation with you right now, you have that strength that makes me believe you’re a good person. Can I trust in that?
A: I’m not sure. I’m not sure what the standard is for judging what is good or bad. For example, on days when I feel good, I would pick up a water bottle or trash that I see on the street and throw them in the bin. Then does that make me a good person? But then, I don’t do that when I’m feeling exhausted and my day isn’t doing well. So, does that make me a bad person? I think it’s a relative and trivial question. I do want to be a good person, but am I a good person? I’m not sure.
Q: Do you also get angry?
A: I do get angry. I don’t think there are many times in my life when I got angry. I try not to. Because being angry doesn’t change anything. It’s better to avoid situations that will make me angry. I also avoid people that make me angry. I don’t want to bother expressing unpleasant feelings.
Q: There are people who take particularly long pauses between words. You’ve been like that this whole time, but that’s great.
A: I have to think. I need to think. I have to think before talking in order to organize (my thoughts) better. I want to express my thoughts and feelings honestly. That’s why I’m often slow.
Q: What do you think about your face?
A: Sorry? My face? So-so. It’s not bad, and it’s also not good. I just like the fact that I have thick hair.
Q: How about your height? Officially, it says you're 188.6 cm tall (~6’2”), but you look taller.
A: Hmm, it’s very hard. Everything is small. I mean, everything in my daily life is low. Ceiling lights or doors are all like that to me. It’s pretty hard.
Q: Are you good at hiding your innermost feelings?
A: I think I’m good at it without revealing it. But I guess I’m obvious.
Q: Haha. You thought you hid it well, but it was obvious, so isn’t that mission failed? There are people who want to joke around a lot. Did you know you’re that type of person?
A: I’ve been wanting to joke around with you since earlier. (laughs) Seeing the reactions is so fun. This suddenly came to mind. Have you been to the *Gangnam Myeonuk main store over here? That place is really good.
(t/n: Gangnam Myeonuk is a restaurant in Gangnam, Seoul)
Q: Their sashimi cold noodles is famous. Their short rib soup is also good.
A: I like their braised short ribs. I fell in love with it after eating it once.
Q: Tonight’s catering menu is braised short ribs. Just a few more questions.
A: All of a sudden? You should go with your usual style. You don’t like cliches, right? It would be fun to end this conversation with braised short ribs. Right?
