Ahn Hyo Seop’s Diligent Growth
He gained the nickname “online boyfriend” due to his extraordinary chemistry with the female lead.
These days, Ahn Hyo Seop is being called “Chul Soo” more than being called by his real name. This is thanks to the numerous “GIFs” that were produced after the drama My Father is Strange ended. Ahn Hyo Seop starred in his first leading role in the drama My Father is Strange after doing supporting roles in the dramas Splash, Splash LOVE, One More Happy Ending, Happy Home, and Entertainer. In this drama, he is the eldest son of the chairman of a large company, but he is struggling to achieve his dream of being a soccer coach. In this weekend drama that boasts about 12 actors including Kim Yeong Cheol, Kim Hae Sook, and Ryu Soo Young, he made his presence known, and even gained the nickname “Jelly Couple” with his partner Byun Ra Young (Ryu Hwayoung). “In my past dramas, I’ve been working with actors around my age, and this is the first time I’m working with people of different age groups, so I was excited. The atmosphere on set was really good. I don’t have a lot of scenes with the senior actors, but whenever I meet them on set, they give me a generous amount of advice. Ryu Soo Young sunbae, in particular, helped me a lot.
Ahn Hyo Seop, who immigrated to Canada at the age of 7, dreamed of a future similar to his pharmacist and accountant siblings. However, one day, he received an offer from an entertainment agency to become an idol trainee, so he came back to Korea alone, and stepped foot in the entertainment industry. This is how he explained his brave decision during that time: “I felt attracted to the idea of trying out a different career field. I wanted an adventure. My curiosity increased as I thought, ‘Will I be able to do well in an area I don’t have experience in?’” Ahn Hyo Seop had no basic understanding (regarding acting) whether it be that the actors’ voices shouldn’t overlap, or that an actor’s actions should be captured on the screen. However, as he learned new things, his desire for acting grew. His role model is Lee Byung Hun. “I want to be an actor like Lee Byung Hun who speaks with his eyes. I want the ability to convey all the emotions through my eyes.” He was also clear about what he wanted to achieve in 10 years. “I want to be an actor with must-see projects. It may seem like an unreasonable dream, but if I work hard as much as I want, I’ll be able to achieve that dream, right?”
The day after the interview, Ahn Hyo Seop sent another response through email. He said he wrote the email in between takes as he was worried that he gave an incomplete answer. There wasn’t much difference between his email and the answer he gave during the interview, but it was more detailed and logical. Ahn Hyo Seop, who tries to look at himself objectively, is no stranger to devoting time and effort to supplementing the parts he’s not good at. The same is true when it comes to acting. He is well aware of his strengths and weaknesses. “I tend to act after I study each script every day. I carefully look at each word and sentence. I can completely understand what emotions I want to exactly express, but sometimes, I miss the wider picture.” He honestly talks about his shortcomings and is not easily swayed by compliments from those around him. Seeing as he doesn’t even bat an eyelid at the cheers of his female fans, his determination seems to be getting stronger. My trust goes out to him.
